The
bakery's back: West Roxbury will soon be Sugared

The invasion of trendy one-word
restaurants is now formally under way in West Roxbury. By July, Eric
Battite, whose successful Real Deal deli has been open for less than
a year, will open a bakery called Sugar in the former Hanley's
bakery space next door on Centre Street.
After
Hanley's shut its doors last October, there were no bakeries in the
neighborhood, except for the in-store bakery at Roche Bros. and
Shaw's.
The
Real Deal and Sugar lease space that's owned by Steve Slyne, who was
proprietor of the famous Steve Slyne's deli before he decided to get
out of the business completely last year.
Battite,
whose Real Deal churns out between 300 and 400 sandwiches and subs
in a single day, will offer cakes, ice cream cakes, pastries, Irish
breads and even brambles. He'll also be baking fresh breads for the
Real Deal.
The
businesses, he said, will be interconnected.
"We're
going to make an entrance from the Real Deal to the bakery," Battite
said. "People want to grab dessert. It'll ease a lot of tension in
there when people are waiting for their sandwiches."
Kelly
Tynan, executive director of West Roxbury Main Streets, said Sugar
will add a desperately needed business to Centre Street.
"In
our retail survey, a lot of people were asking for a new bakery,"
said Tynan. "We're happy that Eric will open up a bakery. If it's
half as successful as the Real Deal, it's going to get a great
response from the community."
There
are plenty of other one-word eateries in the area, but only one
other one in West Roxbury: Vintage. Cambridge is home to Flour, a
bakery renowned across greater Boston for its confections.
"They
gave me inspiration," said Battite, who also owns the Brookline Spa
in Brookline Village. "I just like short names I think. Sugar fit
the bill."
"It's
a very trendy name," said Tynan.
