Those who deserve praise...
Here is a list of some people who deserve thumbs up and thumbs down based on recent actions:
    :

  • The Roche family: Thanks to their generosity, the Parkway has a wonderful skating facility. The Roche family has once again proven themselves to be people who really do care about the neighborhood and the quality of life of their neighbors.

  • New places to dine: A trio of new restaurants is slated to hopefully open this spring on Centre Spring in West Roxbury. With a series of closings last year of longtime local favorites, it's nice to see some new establishments arriving to fill in the dining gap. All three restaurants have the blessing of the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council. The new restaurants include:
        - Na Long has gotten thumbs up to transfer the Cafe le Royal license to open the Phuket Thai Restaurant.
        - Dao Thach is leasing 1735 Centre St., formerly Yoo Hoo's. This Himalayan Bistro will feature Indian and Nepali cuisines. The first Nepali restaurant in Massachusetts will also have take out and delivery.
        - Manuel Sifnugel wants to open the Masona Grill, a Mediterranean and South American cuisine restaurant at 4-6 Corey St. (formerly the Coffee Break shop and Brookline Carpet). He formerly owned the Claremont Cafe in the South End.

  • Beethoven Elementary School musicians: Yesterday (Wednesday), the young musicians at the Beethoven Elementary School performed their first concert of the year. "Making Music Matters" used to be known as "Bring Back the Music." These kids deserve the community's support.

  • Deval Patrick: People in the Parkway love politics, and this year's election season really kicks off this weekend with the Democratic Party caucuses. Although it is still very early, we believe that Patrick is someone worth considering as a Democratic candidate for governor. Outsiders running for governor tend to do much better than those who have been entrenched in the commonwealth's political scene. If the Democrats want a real shot at breaking the GOP's string of gubernatorial election wins, Patrick may be the right candidate.

  • Mother Nature: If you are not a fan of winter weather, the past month has been mostly a real joy with very little snow and temperatures that have some days felt more like spring than winter.
        Thumbs Down:

  • Sokol Bardhi's idea about wanting to add new apartments to his pizza store on Centre Street is not terrible; however, isn't there a way he can do that without blocking the windows of his neighbors, which includes the Violin Studio that sits on top of Kids R Kids? His proposal of a two-story addition as it currently stands would give neighbors a much closer view of those new apartments than they really want or need. The best developments are those that also take into account their neighbors - this proposal fails in that regard and should be reworked.

  • Violent crime: the Parkway, like the rest of the city, has seen a steady increase in violent crime. Guns - or rather, those who are using guns to commit crimes - are a growing problem. It's time for the residents to take back the city. Even usually safe West Roxbury is not immune to the problem.

  • Attorney General Tom Reilly: He has already made a mess of this campaign. Does he really stand any chance of beating Lt. Governor Kerry Healey? We are beginning to doubt it.

  • Mother Nature: If you are a fan of winter, the past month has been mostly a real disappointment with very little snow and temperatures that have some days felt more like spring than winter.
