With the blessing of another
neighborhood group behind him, restaurateur Manuel Sifnugel will
move onto the next course in his bid to open up a new place to dine
in the Parkway.
Masona
Grill, named after his three daughters, will be Sifnugel's place at
the site of the old Coffee Break Caf頡t 4 Corey St. He plans to fuse
French, Italian and Spanish cuisine with some of his own Peruvian
heritage on the menu.
"I'm
in anybody's corner who wants to open a restaurant around here,"
said Philip Slotnick, echoing other neighbors' declarations of glee
at the new place to dine, at a small meeting of the
Stratford-Clement Neighborhood Association last week.
Sifnugel
owned and operated the Claremont Caf頩n the South End for 14 years
before selling it to spend more time with his family, and working on
a smaller scale project.
"It
was a grueling task, but now I'm ready to go for it again," he said.
He described Masona as a small bistro-style caf鬠serving dinners
priced between and , and featuring dishes such as steak frites and
paella.
He
said he wants to introduce an establishment that has "great food,
great atmosphere and comfortable chairs."
Sifnugel
said he does plan to pursue a beer and wine menu so as to
appropriately complement his food, but said he does not need a full
liquor license.
If
things go well and there is a demand, he would consider opening for
lunch, perhaps first offering a Friday afternoon fish course.
"Claremont
Caf頷as an excellent restaurant with interesting cuisine, just a
small, neighborhood-style restaurant," said Doug Raymond, a West
Roxbury resident who was once a neighbor of the Claremont Caf頩n the
South End.
"I
think it's great," said Matthew Guleserian of West Roxbury. "I've
only been here for two years, and West just opened up in the past
year, but before, we never ate in West Roxbury. We'd go into [the
city]."
Dan
Settana, of the council, said, "We just told him to get it
open!"
Sifnugel
said he has yet to attain the permits necessary for construction,
but once he completes that process, including appropriate
inspections, he would like to aim for an April opening date.
